On March 1st, Mary Cash and I went to the Stillwater Public Library and decorated the library’s main display case with small bikes, literature about LAB and our Smart Cycling course, and literature and photos of the RDP, complete with our club jersey.
The 9-hour Smart Cycling course was announced repeatedly on KOSU, was advertised in flyers on campus and at the SPL, and was featured in the local newspapers. Students could sign up either at the SPL or at Cooper’s.
After all this, one student enrolled through Cooper’s and two through the SPL. Of the library two, only one showed up, so we ended up teaching the course to only two interested individuals, Sterlin Hale and Daniel Narvaes.
In introducing himself, Daniel, an engineering grad student who uses his bike for commuting, told us that as an undergrad at Carlton College, MN, he took an 8-hour recreational cycling course. Wow. It impressed me that a college would offer such a course.
Two students or no, we taught the LAB materials: Mary Cash covered “Part I: Maintenance & Bike Handling Basics” on the first day; I covered “Parts II & III: Bicycling in Traffic & Enjoying the Ride” on the second day, and also gave some commuting tips and the written exam.
On Sat., April 4th, We will conduct the hands-on bike skills part of the course. We will teach the Rock Dodge, Quick Stop, Avoidance Weave, and Instant Turn, and then evaluate Sterlin’s and Daniel’s bike handling skills in the parking lot and on Stillwater’s city streets.
Look for a Part III report in the May Issues. |
