The Event
The Larry Schwartz Memorial Tinbutt 12-hour Meltdown is
a UMCA (Ultramarathon
Cycling Association) event that is open to all bicyclists. Tinbutt
is worth one difficulty point (1 d.p.) in the John Marino Competition.
The race is conducted in accordance with the rules
of the John Marino Competition as published in the Jan - Feb
2004 issue of UltraCycling magazine.
The Course
The Tinbutt course is a 22-mile loop on mostly rural roads
with light traffic. One six-mile section is on a fairly busy highway,
but there is an eight-foot-wide paved shoulder on that section.
Most of the course is gently rolling, although the last five miles
of the loop include short, steep rollers.
Recording Distance
Laps will be verified at the START/FINISH line. Each rider MUST
STOP on each lap so that a race official can punch his/her rider
number and enter the time on the lap log. Only full laps will
count with one exception. Riders finishing after 7:00PM but before
7:15PM will be credited with a prorated mileage based on that
riders average speed for the entire day. Riders finishing after
7:15PM will receive no credit for the last lap.
Race Classes
There are classes for male and female riders on single bikes,
tandems, recumbents, and "other." In each class, there
are five-year age groups; 10-14, 15-19, 20-25, etc. Medals will
be awarded to the top three finishers in each age group in each
class.
Drafting
Aerobars and drafting of competing cyclists is allowed.
Drafting of cars and vans, tractors, manure spreaders, and other
motorized vehicles as well as noncompeting riders is not allowed.
Nutrition and Hydration
All riders are responsible for their own nutrition
and hydration needs. There is a convenience store at the park
with a limited variety of food and beverages.
